🧵 Sewing Starter Kit 🧵

Get set up for success with these beginner-friendly tools and supplies!

🪡 Sewing Machines

In class, we use top-loading bobbin machines (much easier than bottom loaders).

  • In 2024-September 2025 our students have all learned on a mechanical sewing machine, but at the end of 2025, we upgraded to all computerized sewing machines.
  • We recommend avoiding any that say “kid” “portable” or “mini” ones that go for $49-$90. These are junky and does not create long-lasting stitching. Also, stay away from Singer heavy duty (too many issues).

We teach on both Brother and Singers

Places to Buy: Amazon, Brand's Direct Website, Best Buy, Facebook Marketplace, Walmart

✂️ Basic Tools

  • Seam ripper (usually included with new machines)

  • Presser feet (standard, zipper, buttonhole — usually included with machines). You can add more to your collection as you learn more techniques!

  • Sewing clips & glass-head pins (glass head allow the iron to go over them)

  • Large Safety pin

  • Fabric marking tools (heat-erasable pens, chalk). The heat removable pens on Amazon are the BEST!

  • Iron or mini heat press

  • Ironing board (full, mini, or pad)

  • Replacement Sewing Machine Needles (Schmetz Brand)

✏️ Cutting Tools

  • Fabric scissors (for fabric only). We like Fiskars brand or a high-quality metal fabric scissor!

  • Paper scissors (for patterns and paper only).

  • Mini thread scissors. We like Fiskars brand!

  • Rotary cutter + extra blades. A good Rotary cutter brand is Fiskars but you can get off-brand replacement blades on Amazon

  • Large rotary cutting mat (required to use a rotary cutter)

  • Long & wide ruler - 6x24 is great

  • Measuring tape (flexible for body measurements)

🧷 Hand-Sewing & Thread

  • Hand-sewing needle pack

  • All-purpose thread (Dual Duty from Michaels is my favorite!) If you buy cheap thread it will constantly break and get frustrating
